Nations in Transit 2010

The OHRID Institute for Economic Strategies and International Affairs announces the newest report published and executed by "Freedom House". In the "Nations in Transit 2010" Republic of Macedonia has 3, 79 rating. Freedom House rates countries with points from 1 to 7 - one being the highest and seven being the lowest in democratic development.In eight categories on which the rating is based, Macedonia has made progress in its electoral process from 3.50 to 3.25 and in the fight against corruption - 4.25 to 4.00. Ratings in other categories remain the same as in the previous report - independence of media (4.25), civil society (3.25), national democratic governance (4.00), local democratic governance (3.75) and judicial framework and independence (4.00). more...

Neuwaldegg Summer Seminar 2010

For the last 8 years, every year 70 students from 28 countries of Central and Eastern Europe participate in the Educational Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe's summer seminar at the Neuwaldegg Institute in Vienna, Austria. The OHRID Institute as part of the EICEE, traditionally for the third time is part of the organization of the Summer Seminar. This year, students, graduate students, and assistant professors from a variety of liberal arts disciplines including psychology, philosophy, politics, business, economics, and law are invited to apply for lectures in Economics, Ethics, Bio-Ethics, Political Philosophy and Metaphysics. more...

Call for Internship

Aiming to build a network of young researchers from all over the world who have an interest in the Balkan (SEE) region and Republic of Macedonia, the OHRID Institute for Economic Strategies and International Affairs launched its internship program for the second year, providing an opportunity to visit, reside, work, be part of the Ohrid Institute team and conduct research in Macedonia and the wider region. The interns will conduct research and actively participating in the work of the OHRID Institute while also gaining hands-on experience of the region and skills in think-tank work. After the completion of their internship, interns remain part of OHRID Institute's community and future cooperation on various projects is encouraged. more...

Quality of Living

The capital of Republic of Macedonia, Skopje is ranked 152nd on the Mercer Human Resource’s annual “Quality of Living” survey, ranking the quality of life in 221 cities around the world. The poll showed that Vienna topped the 2010 Quality of Living Survey. On second and third places are Zurich and Geneva, while tied up in fourth place are Vancouver and Auckland. From the cities in the region, Ljubljana has best ranking, namely it's placed on the 77 rank, Zagreb 102, Bucharest 107, Sofia 111, Belgrade 136. Sarajevo 157 and Tirana 173 are placed behind Skopje. more...

Global Peace Index

Macedonia is ranked 83rd out of 149 countries according to the Global Peace Index, assuming 15th spot out of 27 states in the Central and Eastern Europe region. The Institute for Economics & Peace, which published the 2010 report, says respect of human rights in Macedonia has improved, but the country cannot be ranked higher due to crime and easy access to weapons. The report shows global peace has worsened for the second year running. Best ranked are New Zealand, Iceland, Japan, Austria and Norway, whereas the bottom is occupied by Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Pakistan. more...

OI - PEU Macedonia Conference

The OHRID Institute for Economic Strategies and International Affairs in cooperation with the Pan-European Union of Macedonia, on 29th May, 2010, held a Conference on the topic “EU Enlargement: Between Lisbon Treaty and Economic Recovery.” The Conference was supported by the Secretariat for European Affairs and the Assembly of RM. The Conference focused on the EU enlargement with the countries from the Western Balkan, and especially on the issues and problems that these countries face in the process of their integration in the European Union, and also finding directions for speeding up the integration process, with a special emphasis on the Republic of Macedonia. more...

Report FMRS 2010

Because of the importance of the conference, the OHRID Institute is organizing this event for the second time. Thus, the OHRID Institute develops a tradition for this series of international conferences. The topics for the Conference in Skopje were the current events in the world, the global financial crisis and the world recession. The general topic of the whole this-year “Free Market Road Show®” event is “The Consequences of the High Levels of Public Debts of the European Countries – Consolidation of Public Budgets a Priority.” The event in Skopje was attended by more than 160 participants – active speakers: foreign and domestic experts, state representatives, ambassadors, professors, politicians and business leaders. more...

 

The OHRID Institute has the honor to announce that together with partners from Austria, USA, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia will host the biggest series of conferences so far "Free Market Road Show® 2010". "The Free Market Road Show®" is eminent event, dynamic international series of high level conferences, where business leaders, university professors, politicians, economists and journalists will travel to thirteen European cities and be given a platform to discuss the current issues in the economy on global level together with local colleagues and partners. "The Free Market Road Show®" 2010 will feature some of the most prolific economists, businessmen, and statesmen from around the world to defend the viability of free market economics. The international conferences will consist of panel discussions and presentations in the period between 18 to 26 of May and 7 to 16 September and move through Central and Southeastern Europe and Western Europe as well. The OHRID Institute will turn this conference into a tradition, namely for the second time this caravan of distinguished economic experts will stop in Skopje. The conference in Skopje is planned to last one day and the conference will address the current events worldwide with special focus on public debt. This will be a public event hosting more than 30 participants- foreign and domestic experts, state representatives, ambassadors, professors, politicians, business leaders etc. This year's conference the OHRID Institute is hosting in cooperation with two partners, the University American College and the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce.The Free Market Road Show® Conference will be held on 26th of May, 2010, at the Hotel Holiday Inn. The Lisabon Review 2010

According to the ranking by the World Economic Forum with regards to the enforcement of the aims of the Lisbon Treaty for structural and economic reforms, the Republic of Macedonia takes the 5th place in the group of 11 Eastern European countries which are not EU members. Regarding the final index, Montenegro takes the 1st place with a score of 4.19, and it is immediately followed by Croatia with 4.18. Macedonia is on the 5th place with a score of 3.79, Serbia is on the 8th place with a score of 3.51, and the last place belongs to Bosnia and Herzegovina with a score of 3.07. more...
